"Results show that parents and practitioners learned how to implement Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) with a high procedural integrity and maintained the skills learned. Furthermore, results demonstrate that PECS is an effective intervention to teach individuals [on the autism spectrum] functional communication skills such as independent mands, initiations, word vocalizations, and generalization skills. However, due to variability across studies..., it is difficult to draw definite conclusions about practitioners impact on PECS" (p. 202).
