<div>Four studies investigated barriers to the diagnostic process for autistic adults. Specific barriers included:</div>

<li>difficulty verbalizing to healthcare professionals why individuals felt they could be autistic;</li>
<li>the fear of being disbelieved;</li>
<li>a lack of awareness among professionals about the different presentation of autism across the lifespan; and</li>
<li>misdiagnosis.</li>
</ul>
<div>Limitations to this review included the potential for publication bias and the small number of databases searched.</div>
