The findings suggest that overall working memory training had medium to small effects on the working memory of individuals with intellectual disabilities (d = 0.42 and d = 0.24). Additional findings indicated that mixed working memory training (i.e., training using both verbal and visual-spatial components) had a large effect (d = 0.88). Significant effects on verbal short-term memory were also noted (d = 1.01). While the findings of this review are promising, further research is warranted to examine the long term effects of working memory training and the transfer effects to everyday activities.
