This map includes idiopathic speech sound disorders (SSDs) historically called “articulation and phonological disorders,” organic SSDs that are the result of structural differences (e.g., cleft lip/palate), and speech differences that occur as a result of sensory/perceptual differences (e.g., hearing loss). It does not include acquired SSDs (e.g., apraxia of speech, dysarthria), other motor-based SSDs (e.g., childhood apraxia of speech), or other functional causes (e.g., psychogenic SSDs, functional neurological disorder). See the Apraxia of Speech (Adult), Apraxia of Speech (Childhood), Dysarthria, or Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) Maps, respectively, for information on SSDs in these populations.
