This articles focus on contemporary issues regarding African American English (AAE) in children and adolescents across the school-age years. Articles discuss inherent challenges of the “language differences” paradigm and provide new lenses through which to view cultural, social, and pragmatic aspects of AAE. Specialized topics such as theory of mind, speech acts, and cultural-linguistic features of AAE are given special attention in this issue.

Learning Outcomes
You will be able to:

  • identify the deficit language currently used to describe African American English
  • explain the importance of moving beyond the language difference vs. language deficit discussion
  • recognize ways in which social, pragmatic, and cultural-linguistic differences are reflected in AAE and mainstream American English dialects
  • describe why and how speech-language pathologists might transition from knowing about AAE to advocating for AAE within school settings
