What is the difference between ethics and the law, and where do they intersect? This course will explore the application of the ASHA Code of Ethics, state and federal laws, and payment policy in the health care and education settings. ASHA experts will offer tools and guidance to help audiologists and SLPs navigate the complexities, identify potential risks, and ensure compliance.

Presenter Information

Caroline Bergner, JD, is ASHA’s Director of Health Care Policy for Medicaid. She serves ASHA’s membership by answering member questions; tracking Medicaid policies; and advocating with Medicaid state agencies, Medicaid managed care companies, and CMS. She also works with ASHA’s Committee on Medicaid and the State Advocates for Reimbursement network. She is a Virginia-licensed attorney and has worked in health care policy for more than 15 years.

Meghan Ryan, MSL, received her undergraduate degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences from GW. She obtained her master's degree in health policy and law from Wake Forest Law School. She has worked at ASHA for 10 years and has been part of the Government Affairs and Public Policy team since 2017. She is currently the Director of Health Care Policy, Private Health Plans. In this role, she tracks federal policies that impact private insurance and works with state associations on state legislation and policies impacting private insurance plans. She also runs an annual payer summit to discuss issues most important to ASHA members, with representatives from private insurance companies, utilization management companies, and Medicaid programs. She also works with state insurance commissioners to educate them on issues impacting ASHA members and assisting ASHA members in submitting complaints to insurance commissioners.

Katie Meyer, Esq., is the Senior Director of Ethics at ASHA. In this role, she is an ex-officio member of the ASHA Board of Ethics. Prior to coming to ASHA, she worked for 20 years as an attorney at GKG Law, P.C. in Washington, DC, providing legal counsel to nonprofit and certification organizations. During this time, Katie assisted multiple certification clients with creating and maintaining disciplinary programs. This included drafting and revising codes of ethics and internal procedures, training ethics committees and investigatory panels on disciplinary processes, and providing general guidance regarding the complaint process. Katie has written numerous articles for trade association journals, including Association Trends, Associations Now, and the ASHA Leader. She has spoken nationally on credentialing and ethics for organizations such as the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), the Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE), and ASHA.
