These Perspectives (SIG 16) articles address strategies for working alongside, as well as teaching others, to improve preschool to middle school students’ performance in language, literacy, social skills, and feeding/swallowing abilities, as well as learn how others perceive speech-language pathologists’ efforts in some of these areas.

Learning Outcomes
You will be able to:

  • describe reading teachers’ perceptions of speech-language pathologists (SLPs’) role in literacy intervention
  • list three aspects of high-quality professional developmenttrainings that will improve the language and literacy knowledge and teaching skills of Head Start classroom volunteers
  • identify two topics/skills educators may need additional training and support for when supporting the communication skills of students who useaugmentative and alternative communication
  • list three intervention targets that SLPs, teachers, and parents may wish to consider in an intervention plan for adolescent females with autism spectrum disorder
  • explain factors that impact SLPs’ comfort level in providing feeding and swallowing services in schools based on one’s prior medical experience or lack thereof
