Many school-based SLPs recognize a need to identify and treat swallowing and feeding disorders in their school’s student body but are uncertain about how to do this. In some cases, SLPs are unsure exactly how to start and proceed, and in other cases, their supervisors and/or districts are not supportive of these efforts. In this webinar, the presenter will discuss common apprehensions/fears about swallowing and feeding programs in schools and how to alleviate these concerns. She will provide ideas for implementing these programs in schools as well as strategies for gaining support from administrators and others. The webinar will also include suggestions for working as part of a school-based team to identify and treat students who have swallowing and feeding disorders.

Learning Objectives:
You will be able to:

  • state why, according to IDEA, districts have the responsibility to address swallowing and feeding disorders
  • identify at least one way to address each of the following factors: liability concerns, training concerns, and time constraints
  • explain how to document a student's swallowing and feeding skills on their IEP
