This
webinar will provide an overview of the strengths-based CARE Model framework
for stuttering treatment that supports children and adults who stutter in
building authentic communication skills. The course will include video of
intervention sessions in action and provide concrete strategies for affirming
and expanding each person’s distinct strengths across four
foundational pillars (communication, advocacy, resilience, and education).

- Describe the foundational
principles and four pillars of the CARE Model (Communication, Advocacy,
Resilience, Education) and explain how they inform a holistic, strengths-based
stuttering intervention
- Identify effective and
ineffective presentations of the communication competencies identified in the
CARE Model and explain their role in enhancing authentic and effective
communication for individuals who stutter
- Articulate the theoretical
rationale for shifting away from fluency-focused stuttering treatments toward a
non-ableist model that values whole-person wellness, empowerment, and open
stuttering
- Identify the benefits and best
practices for implementing self-disclosure of stuttering as a key advocacy
strategy that supports client empowerment and reduces
stigma
- Explain the benefits and best
practices for using self-compassion and voluntary stuttering within treatment
as critical tools for building resiliency in individuals who stutter

Courtney
T. Byrd, PhD, CCC-SLP, is a Professor at The University of Texas
at Austin and serves as Founding and Executive Director of the Arthur M. Blank
Center for Stuttering Education and Research, which includes the Michael and
Tami Lang Stuttering Institute, the Dealey Family Foundation Stuttering Clinic,
and the Bodner Developmental Stuttering Lab. She has 100+ publications and has
dedicated her life's work to developing the CARE Model (and the related
intensive dosage “Camp Dream. Speak. Live.”), a
strengths-based approach to the assessment and treatment of
stuttering.
