Functional speech disorders (FSDs) are distinguishable from neurogenic motor speech disorders based on positive clinical features rather than a diagnosis based on exclusion. However, differential diagnosis and management can be challenging. This webinar will provide an overview of the diagnosis and management of FSDs through a number of case examples. The presenter will discuss strategies for documentation, billing, and reimbursement.

Presenter Information
Rene L. Utianski, PhD, CCC-SLP, BC-ANCDS, is Chair of the Division of Speech Pathology in the Department of Neurology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where she also serves as a Consultant. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Speech and Hearing Science and Psychology from The George Washington University, followed by a Master of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders and a Doctor of Philosophy in Speech and Hearing Science from Arizona State University. Dr. Utianski’s clinical work and research program focus on the differential diagnosis and management of acquired and degenerative speech and language disorders, with particular emphasis in motor speech disorders. Her research integrates behavioral, acoustic, and neuroimaging methods to advance understanding of how neurodegenerative diseases affect communication. Dr. Utianski is also involved in professional education, mentoring trainees, interprofessional initiatives, and national efforts to improve diagnostic accuracy and patient-centered care across neurogenic communication disorders.
