Vocabulary acquisition is a common goal for preschool and school-age children. This journal self-study course explores research that can enhance the theoretical basis for SLPs’ common practices and expand clinicians’ repertoire of evidence-based interventions for vocabulary instruction. The articles in this self-study explore increasing expressive vocabulary in school-age children with ASD by focusing on the relationship between individual speech sound inventories and psycholinguistic variables; explicit, embedded vocabulary instruction for at-risk preschool children during literacy activities; intervention for adjectives using learning theory principles; and essential components for effective vocabulary instruction.

Learning Outcomes
You will be able to:

  • explain how utilization of speech sound inventories and phonotactic probability can facilitate expressive vocabulary acquisition in children with autism spectrum disorder
  • describe the use of embedded instruction in literacy activities to promote word learning
  • summarize the three principles of learning theory that can be used to teach acquisition of adjectives
  • discuss findings related to how well specific children’s television programming adheres to principles of vocabulary instruction

Here's what your colleagues have to say:

"I liked the selection of the articles. I thought the studies chosen were relevant to goals frequently targeted in the classroom setting."- Sarah Post Borengasser, MS, CCC-SLP
