Description
This webinar will share information and resources for working with clients and families who use a different language than you do. The speaker will provide a foundation for understanding how to develop collaborative partnerships with interpreters, engage in culturally responsive clinical decision-making, and incorporate strategies to support informed decision-making. The webinar will include practical resources that apply across work settings and client populations. At the end of this webinar, you will be able to identify how to access and engage language assistance resources to support ethical, culturally responsive and person-centered care.
Learning Outcomes
You will be able to:
- Define key concepts related to language access and distinguish between language difference and communication disorder
- Describe ethical and legal responsibilities related to language access in communication sciences and disorders
- Identify strategies for monolingual clinicians/providers whose primary means of communication differs from that of their client/family
- Apply person- and family-centered approaches that support communication and shared decision-making with clients and caregivers
Presenter Information
Dr. Kimberly Green, EdD, CCC-SLP, is Department Chair of Communication Sciences & Disorders at Western Kentucky University (WKU). She also serves as the graduate Speech-Language Pathology Program Director at WKU. Dr. Green has served as a Fellow for the WKU Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning, with involvement extending to chair of the CAPCSD-DEIB Committee and membership on the ASHA Multicultural Issues Board. Her professional areas of interest include interprofessional collaboration, culturally responsive care, and global perspectives in health and human services. She has regularly taught international and study abroad and international speech-language pathology courses in countries including Belgium, France, the UK, and Belize. Dr. Green has also served as a member of the International Centers of Kentucky Board of Directors, which resettles refugees in southern Kentucky.
