Description

This webinar will address the relationship between hearing loss and cognitive decline, focusing on the audiologist’s role in supporting the communication needs of people with dementia. The presenter will discuss the various types of dementia, the difference between dementia and typical aging, and dementia trajectory, as well as hearing technologies and other interventions that can help to maintain social engagement and reduce isolation. The webinar will highlight the importance of ensuring ethical care for individuals with dementia by providing accurate, person-centered, respectful, and evidence-informed information and support to individuals and their caregivers.

Presenter Information

Barbara Weinstein, PhD, is a Professor of Audiology at the Graduate Center, CUNY and the founding Executive Officer of Doctoral Programs in Public Health, Nursing Science and Physical Therapy at the Graduate Center, CUNY. Dr. Weinstein earned her PhD in Audiology from Columbia University, where she began her career as an academic. An Adjunct Professor of Medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center, Dr. Weinstein is a recognized opinion leader in the field of audiology. Dr. Weinstein is the author of both editions of the text titled Geriatric Audiology and is the co-developer of the family of Hearing Handicap Inventories. The Hearing Handicap Inventories have been translated into 20+ languages and is the most widely used patient reported outcome measure used to document hearing aid outcomes, efficacy of rehabilitation/counseling/e-rehabilitation and the benefits of cochlear implants. Dr. Weinstein is currently engaged in public health research in nontraditional settings, including hospital emergency departments and in naturally occurring retirement communities (NORCS). Professor Weinstein is the recipient of numerous awards, including Distinguished Alumnus from Teachers College, Columbia University and Honors of the American Academy of Audiology.
